Why use a beach bottle?
The beach bottle, reusable and durable, is the ally of your summer vacation by the sea. Unlike disposable plastic bottles, reusable beach bottles preserve the environment.
According to a study by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health published in July 2021, water in disposable plastic bottles has an environmental impact up to 3500 times greater than tap water.
Indeed, the environmental impact of disposable plastic bottles is not limited to their end of life: their production requires large quantities of oil. In the United States, no less than 17 million barrels of oil are needed in a single year to satisfy the demand for bottled water.
By investing in a reusable beach bottle, you are therefore helping to reduce plastic production, as well as reducing waste and plastic pollution. Your bottle accompanies you for many years without generating waste. It also allows you to save money: no need to constantly buy plastic bottles.
The reusable beach bottle has another advantage: when it is insulated, it keeps your cold drinks at the right temperature for several hours. Exposed to the heat in your beach bag, a disposable plastic bottle lacks the ability to keep your water cool. However, lukewarm water, even hot, hardly encourages you to hydrate enough.
Finally, the water in your beach bottle remains healthy and free of microplastic particles. As recognized by the WHO in a report published on August 22, 2019, water in disposable plastic bottles contains microparticles of PET and polypropylene, the polymers used to manufacture these single-use bottles.
How to choose your bottle for the beach?
The material of manufacture
Your beach bottle can be made of stainless steel, aluminum, glass or reusable plastic.
The material of choice is stainless steel, or inox, which combines strength, durability, health safety and ease of maintenance. There are several types of stainless steel, whose properties vary according to the composition. Among them, 304 stainless steel is an excellent choice for your beach bottle.
It contains more than 50% iron, less than 1.2% carbon, 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Chromium and nickel give it significant resistance to corrosion and shock, as well as a beautiful shine.
Your stainless steel beach bottle can be cleaned in the dishwasher and requires no specific maintenance. When it is made up of a double stainless steel wall separated by an air gap, its isothermal properties allow it to keep your drinks cold for 48 hours.
You can also opt for an aluminum beach bottle. This material is sometimes singled out because of the coating affixed to the internal walls of the bottle. Unlike stainless steel, aluminum cannot be in direct contact with drinks for health reasons, which explains the mandatory presence of a coating.
However, this coating must imperatively comply with the regulations in force and not contain any potentially harmful substance, such as bisphenol A for example, this endocrine disruptor long authorized in many plastic products.
The same goes for reusable plastic beach bottles, which have a lower lifespan than stainless steel models, but have a lower purchase price.
Glass beach bottles, on the other hand, are perfectly healthy but heavy and more fragile than stainless steel or aluminum. They may be bulky in your beach bag, and are more suitable for home use.
The type of cap
Above all, the cap of your beach bottle must be perfectly sealed to avoid any disappointment. If you inadvertently spill your closed bottle, a silicone seal will prevent leaks and keep your things dry.
The most classic cap is the screw cap, which is easy to use. For even easier handling, you can opt for a beach bottle with a sports cap, which allows you to drink while walking or running without spilling a drop of water.
Some beach bottles are equipped with a so-called "half twist" cap, which opens and closes by unscrewing it only a quarter turn.
There are also caps with an integrated straw, allowing you to drink without having to tilt your head, or cup caps that avoid drinking from the neck.
